Sweet Halloween Recipe Idea #3 – Scary Black Cat Halloween Cake

The black cat is an iconic Halloween symbol, and this delicious cake will delight cat lovers everywhere!

What You Need:

  • 1 (18.25 oz.) chocolate cake mix

  • 1 (16 oz.) can chocolate frosting
  • 2 yellow gumdrops
  • 1 green gumdrop
  • 1 red gumdrop
  • 2 pieces of shoestring black licorice
  • 6 pieces of candy corn

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2. Line two round 9 inch cake pans with parchment paper and lightly grease.
3. Prepare the cake mix according the direction on the package.
Pour the batter into the 2 prepared cake pans.
4. Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
5. Remove the pans from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes in the pans.
6. Remove the cakes from the pans and place on a wire rack to cool to room temperature.
7. Remove the parchment paper from the cakes.
8. Place one of the cakes on a large platter or covered board.
9. From the remaining cake cut a 1 inch wide crescent-shaped slice – this is the cat’s tail.
10. From the cut cake measure 2 inches from the center and make a vertical cut.
11. Cut this piece in half to form the cat’s ears and set aside.
12. Trim the remaining piece of the cut cake to form a circle for the cat’s head.
13. Spread frosting over the top and sides of the first piece of cake.
14. Attach the tail to the bottom of the cake with a little frosting, then apply frosting to the tail.
15. Attach the cat’s head with frosting, then frost the head in the same way as the tail.
16. Attach the cat’s ears with frosting then completely frost the ears.
17. Place the yellow gum drops on the head to represent the eyes.
18. Cut the green gum drop in half and attach to the yellow eyes using toothpicks to form the pupils.
19. Place the red gum drop on the face to form the cat’s nose.
20. Cut the black liquorice and press it into the cat’s face to create the whiskers and mouth.
21. Press the candy corn into the base, three on each side, to represent the toes.

Although this black cat Halloween cake does take a bit of time to piece together, it’s worth it, as it makes a fantastic centrepiece for your table. You can also use brownie mix as a substitute for cake mix if you prefer.
