Everyone knows that pollution is a problem these days, and much of it is preventable with just a bit of thought and effort. Holiday celebrations like Halloween typically involve even more consumption and waste than normal, so if you care about the planet and want to do your bit to improve things, here are some suggestions for having a more eco-friendly Halloween this year.
1. Use Substitutes For Paper Halloween Cards
Paper Halloween cards cause a lot of waste, and are usually just tossed in the trash soon after they’re received. So one thing you can do is to use alternative methods for sending out your Halloween invites. One obvious solution is to just call or email people to invite them to your Halloween party, but if you want to send a physical invite, you can also get creative and use things that people are less likely to throw away upon receipt.
For example, you can use Halloween gifts to do double duty as invitation cards. If you would be giving a person a present at Halloween anyway, such as a gift basket, try adding your invitation message to the basket itself. If you’re purchasing a pre-made Halloween gift basket, ask the seller to do this for you. Since people tend to keep gift baskets for many months or years, you won’t be creating waste with your invitation, and the recipient will actually end up with something useful.

Similarly, Halloween gift bags of the type that are used for party favors or trick and treating can be used as invitations too – just write your message on the bag itself.
2. Give Edible Gifts
If you’re giving gifts to friends or children, you can also cut down on waste by giving edible treats as presents. Halloween-themed cookies, candy and other dishes will be especially popular. These will probably be appreciated more than cheap toys and other plastic tat that will most likely be used a few times then discarded. If you make the food yourself so much the better, as you can then avoid all the excess packaging that bought foods often come with.
3. Leave The Car At Home
If you have kids who are going trick or treating, will you be driving them around? This is quite a common practice, but unless you or your kids have health/mobility issues or live out in the middle of nowhere, it’s not usually necessary. This year, try leaving the car behind if possible and making your rounds of the neighborhood on foot, and you’ll reap various benefits:
a) You and your kids will burn off some of the calories from all the Halloween treats you’re probably eating!
b) You’ll save money on the gas you would have used.
c) Last but not least, you’ll be reducing the amount of pollution caused by your car.
Put these tips into practice, and you can enjoy Halloween and feel good about doing your bit for the planet too!
