Three Easy Halloween Pumpkin Decorating Ideas

Halloween wouldn’t be Halloween without Halloween pumpkins, and if you’re like most people, you properly want to decorate your house with a pumpkin or two to celebrate. But where do you start?

Fortunately, decorating pumpkins is easy. Let’s take a look at three common Halloween pumpkin decorating ideas to get started with.

1. Pumpkin Carving

Pumpkin carving is a very popular pumpkin decoration method. Carved pumpkins that are lit from within by a candle or torch can look absolutely stunning, and designs range from a simple cut out face to highly elaborate patterns that are really works of art.

The basic Halloween pumpkin carving process is simple. You need to cut the top off the pumpkin, scoop out the insides, draw your design on the surface of the pumpkin, and then cut it out using a small sharp knife or specialist pumpkin carving tool. You might also find it helpful to thin the walls of the pumpkin before cutting out your design. Once carving process is complete, it’s a good idea to spray the pumpkin with a preservative, so it will last longer.

The pumpkin carving process is not difficult, although it does require some effort. It’s also not really suitable for children, since knives are involved. You may wish to create your own designs, or if you’re looking for inspiration, a huge number of pumpkin carving designs are freely available on the internet.

2. Pumpkin Painting

Pumpkin painting is less well known than pumpkin carving, but it is becoming increasingly popular, especially among people with children. With pumpkin painting, you don’t need to mess about with sharp knives, but can instead create stunning designs on the surface of your pumpkin using paint.

As with carvings, pumpkin painting designs can be as simple or as elaborate as you like. Scary faces are always popular, but you could also experiment with other Halloween motifs such as spiders, bats, ghosts and the like. Pumpkin painting is especially fun for children, who can enjoy it with minimal assistance from adults.

Pumpkins can be painted with easily available markers or acrylic paints, and can be sprayed with a sealant when complete, to help preserve your design.

And don’t think you have to be artistically talented to produce a great looking painted pumpkin either – it’s possible to get excellent results with minimal skill, especially you follow the steps outlined in the Easy Pumpkin Painting book.

3. Pumpkin Embellishing

Both painted and carved pumpkins can be embellished further by decorating them with sequins, glitter, ribbons, beads and other materials. You can also use these kinds of embellishments as your only pumpkin decorating technique, especially if you want something that’s a bit different from the usual carved pumpkins.

So take a trip to your local craft shop, or head over to eBay, and you’ll find a treasure trove of pretty things for creating beautiful looking pumpkins this Halloween.
