Halloween Lighting
Firstly, let’s think about Halloween lighting. It’s easy to spend a lot on Halloween lights, but it’s really not necessary, especially if you use candles. Candles have the advantage of being traditionally associated with all things magical and supernatural, so they instantly create a great Halloween atmosphere with very little effort on your part.
However, to jazz things up a bit try this – just get some apples, and using an apple corer or sharp knife, make holes in the middle that are large enough to hold the candles. Then insert one candle per apple and float the apples in a large punch bowl or other similar container filled with water (try adding a bit of red grape juice or tomato juice to the water to give it a nice bloody color!). This is a simple display to create, but when you light up your candles in a dark room, they’ll create a stunning effect.
Candles also work very well when they’re used to illuminate jack-o’-lanterns, and there’s no limit to the types of scary pumpkin carving designs you can create for your lanterns.
Halloween Characters
Halloween bats, spiders, witches, skeletons and other creatures are an essential part of any Halloween decorating scheme. However, rather than buying ready-made Halloween figures from the shops, you can make your own Halloween decorations by creating paper cutouts of these shapes and sticking them in your windows, or hanging them from doorways and ceilings. If you have trees in your yard, they can also be suspended from the branches, to give your guests a nice fright as they approach your house.
You could also try buying tiny plastic spiders and other scary creatures from the dollar store or eBay (which can also be a good source of discount Halloween decorations), and freezing them in ice cubes – these will make a great addition to your guests’ Halloween drinks.
Halloween Music
Another very cheap and easy way to create a scary Halloween atmosphere quickly is to put on a CD of Halloween music or sound effects. These recordings can be bought extremely cheaply on Amazon
