Popular Halloween characters such as witches, ghosts, vampires and scarecrows are so well known as to have become synonymous with Halloween, and you’ll often find them adorning Halloween cards and other Halloween merchandise. But what if you want something a bit different for your Halloween invitations, greeting cards or party decorations this year? Read on and we’ll take a look at two scary characters that are a bit less well known, that will make your party stand out from the crowd!
1. Mummies
Mummies are strongly linked in the popular imagination with the country of Egypt, and in ancient Egypt the
practice of mummification was well known. As a ritual that was carried out to purify the dead, mummification was commonly carried out for high ranking figures, such as Pharaohs, although animals were sometimes mummified too, especially cats, who were revered by the ancient Egyptians.

In more recent years, mummies have become a popular figure in horror fiction and movies, being seen as a fearful figure, risen from the dead to cause harm to the living.
However, the mummy isn’t such as popular Halloween character as ghosts, vampires and the like, and isn’t often used as a theme for Halloween cards. So by doing so, you’ll be setting your cards apart.
Mummy costumes are also very effective, and usually take the form of a dress or top and pants which are designed to look like unraveling bandages. This can be topped off with a scary mask or corpse make-up for added authenticity.
2. Zombies
Zombies are another popular figure from the world of horror movies, and gained iconic status after the release of George A. Romero’s 1968 chiller ‘Night Of The Living Dead’.

Unlike other Halloween characters, the zombie has a basis in physical reality too – they formed an integral part of the practice of Voodoo, and studies show that living people can be made to behave in a zombie-like manner after consuming certain drugs that produce this effect.
Like mummies though, zombies aren’t as strongly linked with Halloween as other scary figures, so they’re another good candidate for using on your Halloween cards if you want something a bit different. Zombie masks can be teamed with raggedy clothing to make a great Halloween costume, and zombie decorations
are also available for your house and yard. Be aware though that many children find zombies genuinely frightening, so they’re probably not the best choice if children will be involved with your party!
So, as you can see, the most common Halloween characters aren’t the only ones that you can base a party around, so why not include zombies or mummies in your theme this year and give your guests an extra-macabre party atmosphere!
